Common Rug Patterns

Amristar

Amritsar rugs are distinctively within the production of South Asian carpets.  The rug weavers were free to approach carpet design more on the basis of western needs than on their own traditions, so that carpets were, from the beginning, well adapted to western decorative use.  Amritsar rugs were generally made with a softer more earthy palette, often with a tendency to burgundy or aubergine tones.   There are many designs employed and include Persian 16th-17th century classical motifs as well as patterns from other Indian and Turkish cities.

The designs were not unique.   They were produced for a western market, mostly modifying many other traditional designs.

These are recent examples from Pakistan.
